Ochre on Canvas
120 x 90 cm
This painting is my memory of moving through Country, not just the land itself, but the feeling of it.
When I painted The Road to Texas Downs Camping Ground, I was thinking about that journey back to my mother’s Country. Texas Downs is a powerful place, just north-east of Warmun, and every time I return, I feel the stories rise up from the land. I carry them with me.
I used ochres from Gija Country; colours from the earth that speak. You see the warm yellows, soft pinks, deep greens, reds, and blacks, they come together like pieces of a living map. Each block, each shape holds part of the land’s spirit: the rocky outcrops, waterholes, walking paths, and hidden places only family know.
I painted what the spirit remembers; what is felt through connection to Country. The bold lines carry movement, memory, and direction, guiding the eye across the land. The spaces between hold quiet strength; they represent the still places of Country, where stories live and the land listens.
This is not just a road. It’s the way home. It’s walking with old people. It’s remembering who you are, where you come from. When I paint like this, I feel proud; proud to stand on my mother’s land and to show that even through new forms and colours, our Country is always alive.
My art is for the next generation too, to remind them that even when things change, the land stays strong. And so do we.
