Ochre on Canvas
80 x 100cm
Painted with traditional ochres sourced from Gija Country, this work is a tribute to Ngargaroon; my mother’s Country, also known as Texas Downs, just north-east of Warmun. It captures the powerful spirit, ancient stories, and striking natural beauty of this sacred place, where waterholes, Dreamtime sites, and generations of stories are woven into the landscape.
The canvas comes alive with an earthy palette of soft pinks, deep greens, rich reds, warm yellows, and deep greys; each pigment drawn directly from the land itself, carrying its own story and memory. These colours depict the undulating hills, layered rocky outcrops, and scattered waterholes of Texas Country, evoking both the physical landscape and its living spirit.
This painting is more than a landscape; it is a living memory, a reflection of belonging, and a connection to those who walked before us. Every shape and colour holds meaning, honouring the enduring presence of our old people, the stories they carry, and the deep relationship between family, story, and land.
Through this work, I keep Ngargaroon’s stories alive; reminding us that Country is not only place, but spirit, identity, and memory. In the hands of its artists and the colours of ochre, the land continues to breathe, speak, and live.
