In the outback of Gija Country, hidden between the ranges, lies a secret oasis known as Winupar Springs. This hidden gorge, surrounded by lush pandanis and palm trees, boasts a spring of pure water that flows year-round, providing life, healing, and sanctuary. This place is my fathers’ country, and it holds incredible significance for us. It embodies quality time spent with family and loved ones, the beauty of nature at its finest, and countless cherished memories. Painted with a fusion of traditional ochre sourced from Gija Country and Acrylics this piece reflects the tranquil beauty of the landscape while drawing on the rich stories woven into this land. The gentle flow of water depicted in the artwork symbolizes the passage of time and the enduring legacy of my grandfather’s spirit. This piece transcends mere representation; it celebrates our heritage and the intimate bond we share with our ancestors, encapsulating the essence of our connection with Country and the profound stories it holds. ‘This is my family place. Hot water spring and cold water spring. That big hill on the background is my family place. That water live all year ’round. That little sand frog, it live for a long time.’ This place is the Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) site for the sand frog. The waterhole at Winupar holds water all through the Dry season.
