In the outback of Gija Country, hidden between the ranges, lies a secret oasis known as Winupar Springs. This hidden gorge, surrounded by lush pandanis and palm trees, boasts a spring of pure water that flows year-round, providing life, healing, and sanctuary. This place is my grandfather’s country, and it holds incredible significance for us. It embodies quality time spent with family and loved ones, the beauty of nature at its finest, and countless cherished memories.This piece reflects the tranquil beauty of the landscape while drawing on the rich stories woven into this land. Winupar Spring – Fishing Place captures a vital waterway flowing through ancestral Gija Country. This river runs from Winupar Spring to a site known as Fish Hole; a place rich in story, memory, and connection. More than just a source of water, this river links families. It connects Jonathon’s family with those of Patrick Mung and Mark Nodea (through his mother’s side), creating a deep and enduring bond across generations and kinship lines. These fishing places are where people come together—sharing food, laughter, and stories; teaching the young; and honouring the old. Painted with traditional ochres from Gija Country and the East Kimberley, the work reflects the strength of these relationships and the importance of place in maintaining them. The water, always moving, is a symbol of life, continuity, and connection. This is more than a fishing spot, it’s a meeting place, a memory place, and a family place.
