Description
60 x 60 cm Acrylic and Ochre on Canvas
This painting, Warlawoon, is about my love for my country, my love for my Aboriginal family, and my love for Jesus. The waterhole in the middle of the painting is on my Dad’s Warlawoon (Bedford Downs) country and is protected by the range. The background is a pink ochre out of love for my beautiful old Artist Dad, who left his memory with me to carry on after him. Love for the trees, love for the camping areas, love for the water holes, love for the hills, and love for the traditional stories of my Dad’s mum and dad, love for their parents, and love for the ancestors before them. I paint this country as my Dad painted it, to carry on his memory and his love for country. It was a long road to arrive here, and it is my love for country, love for my family, and my love for Jesus, that holds me strong. During my younger years I struggled with many things in life. Nothing worked out the way I wanted it to be. I had pretty rough and tough times, but I was always humble in my ways. I was an alcoholic, drinking seven days a week in town Kununurra, walking around dirty. I felt no one loved me. My love life was very bad. I used to swear bad but not at my parents and brothers and sisters. I used to love them so much. Until one day in the year of 2008, I lost my eldest son and became even more sad for myself. I felt like doing something bad to myself. But my Mum was always there for me. Whenever I would make a move to do something harmful, she would ask me to stop and have someone to watch over me. Then I buried my son in Bow River.
