In his artworks, Cecil Mosquito captures the story of his grandmother ganggal and the dingo track dreaming, tarrngarrel marranyil nyaitja warlakipal daayurrung. This is the story of her bush name, a name given to her by her father and a name directly connected to Gija jarlaloon country. In his own words, Cecil describes a bush name as something “meaningful because we are given [it] for a reason… from someone who walked the land.” Bush names are deeply personal, chosen by family and relate to the unique attributes of each individual person and their connection to country. Cecil maps out the story of the dingo track dreaming, tarrngarrel marranyil nyaitja warlakipal daayurrung, as the journey of a dingo and her pups travelling through country. In this story, the dingo makes trails, hunts, gathers and always helps her family make their way back home, daam. In his painting, the strength of Cecil’s grandmother and her intuition are highlighted alongside her bush name “tarrngarrel marranyil nyaitja warlakipal daayurrung,” which also means dingo track. Holding onto his memories of travelling with his grandmother through country, he remembers the way that she, like the dingo, gathered food, created tracks and always helped their family find their way back home, daam. Cecil acknowledges the connection between this story and his grandmother, stating that “the tracks are still there, and the memory is still there.” This story highlights Cecil’s ongoing connection to Gija country and the impact of family within his artmaking practise.
