Contemporary Archaeology
Leon Pericles AM presents a major exhibition of new work titled Contemporary Archaeology, offering a compelling exploration of material culture, time and transformation. This latest body of work reflects Pericles’ ongoing fascination with the overlooked remnants of everyday life. Drawing from objects found in the environment, fragments of plastic, metal and manufactured materials, the exhibition reimagines these discarded elements as artefacts of our time.
Through processes of observation, collection and reinterpretation, Pericles reveals the unexpected beauty and significance embedded within the ordinary. “Walking through the world, you begin to notice what has been left behind,” Pericles says. “These objects are shaped not only by human use, but by sun, rain, heat and time. They carry a history, even if they are only a few years old.” Exposed to natural elements, these materials undergo rapid transformation. Plastics become textured and aged, metals are compressed and reshaped, and surfaces develop qualities that evoke antiquity. Pericles approaches these objects with the sensibility of an archaeologist, assembling them into works that suggest a narrative of contemporary society.
