‘Kimberley Whispers’
“My inspiration for this show:
The land is never completely silent.
If it isn’t birds, it’s cicadas, crickets, wind — movement layered over time.
These works come from listening closely to the Kimberley.
Not to loud declarations, but to what is carried in rhythm, weather and change.
Through abstraction, the paintings speak to presence as much as place — to the feeling of this ancient Country as it continues to express itself.
My practice begins in the landscape: becoming immersed, noticing the smallest details and patterns, absorbing every sound. Those lived experiences settle within me, then emerge again as flowing, emotional works — reflections of a land that is at once powerful, intricate and profoundly beautiful..”

About The Artist
Originally from South Africa, Jeanne Barnes studied Fine Art at Technikon Pretoria after attending the Johannesburg Art, Ballet, Drama and Music School (now the National School of the Arts). After many successful years in the jewellery industry, she migrated to Australia in 2008 and became a full-time artist in 2016.
Now based in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, Jeanne draws inspiration from the landscape, boab trees, wildlife and people of the region. Working primarily in watercolour, her distinctive style often incorporates metal leaf, natural ochres and rough diamonds.
Jeanne’s work is held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally, including the UK, USA, New Zealand, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, France, Norway, Switzerland, Germany and China. She is also well known for her immersive art workshops and her strong connection to the Kimberley arts community.
