As an artist, my work is deeply informed by living and working 26 years in the Pilbara. I was privileged to listen, learn and yarn about many stories from a Kuruma Marthedunera woman (a very special friend) over many years. She shared how she would see sacred ancestor portals – described as appearing like a heat shimmer, with a calm still circle within. These portals were explained as expressions of divine energy, connected to her Songlines and the ancestral presence that continues to move through Country. The circles I paint are my personal interpretation of their descriptions- an honouring of what was shared with me over the years, a visual response to the deep spiritual connection between people, Country and ancestral memories.
This work is created with respect and gratitude, acknowledging the enduring cultural knowledge of the Traditional Owners of the land.
