“Returning to Broome on my 50th birthday, after having lived there in my 20s, was a dream fulfilled. I had often wondered whether the connection I had to the place would still exist after all these years. To my surprise, it was even stronger than I remembered. The moment I arrived, I felt a profound and unexpected bond, as if the past and present were woven together seamlessly.

In this experience, I found myself reconnecting with the adventurous, playful, and carefree spirit of my younger self. It was a flood of memories and emotions—the places, the colours, the energy of a time in my life that shaped who I am today.

Through my work, I aim to pay tribute to that version of myself and the place that rekindled those feelings. My art celebrates the vibrant, colourful nature of Broome—the joy, the freedom, and the boundless possibility that I first encountered there and continue to carry with me.”   Mirella Prolongeau
